The JazzFestBrno international jazz festival was established in 2002. The original weekend music event grew into a multi-week cultural extravaganza that brings the best of what contemporary jazz has to offer to its fans travelling to Brno from across the country and abroad. The list of stars who have performed at the festival is a veritable who’s who, with names such as Wynton Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, Gregory Porter, Herbie Hanock, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter. Many world-renowned performers (e.g. Take 6, Dianne Schuur, Jacky Terrasson, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Fred Hersch) had their first ever Czech performance at JazzFestBrno.
Thanks to uncompromising and innovative dramaturgy, jazz is presented in all its diversity, not only as a genre with a deep tradition, but also as an ever-evolving platform for experimentation and fusion of all kinds of influences from the contemporary art world. The festival cultivates the domestic jazz scene with the opportunity for direct comparison to the best in the world, as well as artistic opportunities for established bands and unique special projects. Fans are actively involved in festival events by participating in numerous jam sessions, club events and workshops. JazzFest’s collaboration with both Czech jazz interpretation departments is presented in the spring festival section with a full-length student concert, and in the summer at the separate Jazz Courtyard mini-festival.
